Bold Theatre. Fearless Stories.

Independent Theatre. Powerful Storytelling. Uncompromising Creativity.

The Birmingham Black Box Theatre Group CIC is an independent theatre production company founded by writer, director, producer and sociologist Dr Carlette Norwood.

Rooted in Birmingham UK and working across the wider UK, the company is dedicated to developing and presenting compelling theatrical productions that challenge perspectives, amplify underrepresented voices and explore the complexities of the human experience.

Our work brings together original writing, innovative direction and powerful performances to create theatre that is both thought-provoking and emotionally engaging.

Our Artistic Vision

We believe theatre should do more than entertain. It should provoke conversation, challenge assumptions, illuminate overlooked histories and create opportunities for audiences to encounter experiences beyond their own.

Our productions explore themes of identity, history, race, relationships, power and the psychological dimensions of human behaviour. From historical dramas to contemporary psychological narratives, we are drawn to stories that reveal something meaningful about the societies we inhabit and the people we become.

We are particularly committed to bringing stories to the stage that have been overlooked, misunderstood or left untold.

Our Productions

Laroche

Historical Drama

Written and directed by Dr Carlette Norwood, Laroche tells the extraordinary story of Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche, the Haitian engineer who was the only known Black passenger aboard RMS Titanic.

Since its premiere in 2024, the production has achieved seven sold-out performances, including a successful presentation in Liverpool. Its growing recognition has created exciting opportunities for further touring and theatrical partnerships.

The Narcissist

Contemporary Psychological Drama

An original theatrical exploration of narcissistic abuse, emotional manipulation, coercive control and the often-invisible psychological consequences of harmful relationships.

Through an intimate and emotionally complex narrative, The Narcissist examines the boundaries between love, dependency, power and personal identity.

Creative Leadership

The company is led by Founder and Creative Director Dr Carlette Norwood, whose multidisciplinary career encompasses theatre, film, academic research, education and professional leadership.

Her background as a sociologist informs the company's distinctive approach to storytelling, combining psychological insight, social awareness and historical research with compelling dramatic narratives.

Working collaboratively with actors, directors, designers, technicians and other creative professionals, the company is committed to producing high-quality independent theatre while supporting creative talent and artistic development.

Touring and Partnerships

The Birmingham Black Box Theatre Group CIC develops productions for presentation in theatres, arts centres, cultural institutions, museums, festivals and other performance spaces.

We welcome opportunities to collaborate with venues, arts organisations, cultural programmers and creative partners interested in bringing distinctive, meaningful theatrical work to wider audiences.

Our productions can also provide a foundation for audience discussions, educational engagement and conversations exploring the historical and contemporary issues presented on stage.
